Day 2: Monday, May 25: Mathew Ch 4 - 5

17 comments:

  1. Day 2 is upon us. I read all the comments posted yesterday. Thanks for posting!

Today I wrote 15 comments in my spiral notebook journal over the 3 chapters. Several verses made me freeze and think about what I just read. Here are 3 thots:

4:6 -- Sometimes people can be tempted to sin and have a Bible verse to "prove their (wrong) point!" Reminds me how much we REALLY need to know the Word, so we don't get fooled.

5:11-12 - "Dear God, it would be GREAT if this happened to Grace, in the context of a larger movement of yours in this world. Please give us your 'game changing' strategy to help reach people and take them deeper...which will be misunderstood by some."

6:1 -- I can be guilty of this too, Lord...wanting people to SEE what I've done. God please help me rejoice if no one else knows but You.

  2. In chapter 4 there are a couple things that jump out at me. First, is the fact that Satan tries to tempt Jesus at all. What an imbicile! I picture the scene of Jesus and Satan standing on a mountain and Satan says, "all these kingdoms I will give you..." blah, blah, blah. I'm sure Jesus held back a smirk and fought His desire to say, "Dude, you realize My Dad rules over everything anyway and in the end you don't have a shot for shit!" He obviously answered with more class... but it had to be what He was thinking!

Second, when Jesus called his disciples it says they left their nets and their father to follow Him. This stands as a reminder to me that God's kingdom comes first, above career, above family, above anything on this earth. I forget that sometimes.

Chapter 5: LOVE the beatitudes. I think Jesus thought, "how can I give people a host of information in a short time?" And He came up with Beatitudes.

5:16 "Let your light shine before men that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in Heaven." ... that's my prayer.

What Jesus says about Murder and Adultery proves as a reminder that God looks at the motive of the heart... that He wants the production of real fruit in our lives, not faux fruit.

Divorce: I have to admit I'm unclear on the whole thing. See, if infidelity is not at play in either spouse, but the husband comes home one day and says he doesn't want to be married anymore. How does that make the wife an adulteress??? And how does that make anyone she re-marries, an adulterer?? Seems like it should only make the original husband an Ass! .... I obviously don't get it.

The "Oaths" section is a reminder to me that we have no control over what happens in our lives... so live honestly and trust God.

5:38-41 speaks of revenge and vs. 42 speaks of giving.... seems these verses don't fit together.

5:44 - "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." This one is hard for me... though it doesn't say WHAT you should pray pertaining to your enemies! This omission opens the door for prayers such as "God please let my enemies fall off cliffs, etc." I know... I'm bad... pray for me.

5:48 - "Be perfect therefore as your Heavenly Father is perfect." Highest call and expectation. I obviously fall way, way short! But my prayer is that God will perfect my heart in new little ways every day... as I am grateful to be His and thankful He doesn't let go.

  3. Satan tempts Jesus in the desert... living God's way vs. my way. HUGE struggle for me. I need to do things/wait for things, in God's time table.

Matthew 4:8-10- reminds me to turn away from materialism. I don't want things, because others have them, but I do want things because we could USE it. But that is still materialism. Jesus turned away from the devils offer, knowing by serving God, good things would come to him.... BE STILL, DEBBIE!

4 fishermen follow Jesus- this is a WOW for me. How these men left the only life they knew, their boats, their families, their "income"; and put TOTAL control, TOTAL trust in Jesus. Could I do that? Could I walk away from my home in Olathe-- without even saying good-bye to my husband and kids? I SUCK!

Divorce: is this to be taken literally? That a woman who is divorced, even though she wasn't unfaithful, is an adulteress???!!? If so, I don't get it.

Retaliation: hummm..... sounds like me behind the wheel of my car.

  4. Debbie, I am wondering the same thing. I have heard different teachings on this but can't think of any verses to back up either side of the argument.

CH4- Satan was real and is real. Jesus saw him face to face and I need to remember my battle is in the heavenly realm with Him, NOT with the men who are here on Earth, and I need to act accordingly- NOT here on Earth, but with prayer.

vs 10- Lord, what do I have as my idols that I may not even know?

vs 20- Simon Peter,Andrew, James and John followed Christ immediately- left everything. Can I do this? REALLY do this if God calls me to? If not then I am not sold out for Christ. This is opposite from the world, but I need to live this.
Look at what was accomplished when they left everything, all their lives to follow God. Amazing.

    CH5. Love the B's!

How can I lose my saltiness? Have I lost it?
Being angry with anyone is murdering them. There is no "right" to be angry in God's eyes. What about Godly anger?

I need to let my yes be yes and my no be no. Especially to my kids. Unwavering. They need to know I'm solid.

CH6- I need to learn to be quick to forgive, ALWAYS, no matter how much I think I'm entitled.
Fasting, I get this, and love the results I've seen in others as they fast and pray over important things.

How can I keep from storing treasure here on Earth? Does this mean I am to own nothing? nadda, zilch? Or just when things become #1 in my heart?

    Don't worry, vs 25- I am super-loved! (To steal my husband's T-shirt idea)

  5. Matthew 4:18-21
Jesus walked by 4 fishermen and said follow me. No hesitation, no ok, just a minute...nothing. They had complete trust in Jesus to drop everything and follow.....Brian talked about this as one of the requirements of following on Sunday.

    Matthew 5: 1-12
God says those that are suffering, meek, pure in heart, persecuted on Earth will be rewarded in heaven...gotta keep my eye on the prize. It is very easy sometimes to say, "whoa is me." Need to keep in mind that heaven is the greatest reward and that is my focus...

    Mathew 5; 21-48
I get the verses about anger, lust, divorce, vows and loving thy enemy, but I am confused about retailation. Old testiment say eye for eye, tooth for tooth, but new testiment says if the guy hits your right cheek, let him hit you again...which is the way to follow?

  6. This is Cathy

Ch 4 Jesus was tempted right before he began his ministry. Expect trials before God is going to do something big. The things he was tempted with I can totally get – food was an issue for him too. And power and recognition were temptations.

v.18 Jesus grabbed people as his disciples that were already engaged in something

Ch 5 Ye are the light of the world. Let your light so shine before men. If I woke up every morning thinking about that rather than the circumstances of life I think I would have a much better day.

  7. Matt 4
Just like Jesus said no to satan immediately, I need to be better at that...being around a concentration of family this past week and weekend I allowed an emotional stronghold to overwhelm me when I knew I should come against it but didn't. So I was miserable for it rather than confronting and nipping it in the bud.

Amazing how when Jesus called for the men to follow Him they immediately dropped what they were doing! It always amazes me every time I read it and convicts me to be more willing to do the same.

    Matt 5
When it talks about just looking at a woman lustfully that adultery is already committed in your heart.....I think of how important it is to be careful about dwelling on anything bad in your mind because of how easy it is to to influence you to take a step further with those thoughts. 2 Cor 10:5 is a verse I use regularly for this! (taking thoughts captive to the knowledge of Christ)

    Matt 6
This was opportune as far as reminding me I had some forgiveness I needed to attend to in my heart.

I think I'm a little better about not allowing worry to control me...wish I was better at having a more complete faith. It's something I have to work at daily.

  8. Matthew 4 Jesus being tempted
Each time Jesus was tempted he had a verse in the Bible to support Him. (in the correct context as Tim noted earlier. I am not equipped to do battle. My knowledge of the Bible is not what it needs to be.

    Matthew 5 Teachings of Jesus
I got hung up on verses 11-12. Sounds weird to say but I have not been persecuted enough lately. I am NOT standing out far enough to be reviled or had evil falsely accused of me. I believe I'm playing it too safe. Which scares the crud out of me to say outloud.

  9. Matt 4:1-11
I know Jesus is God-but still, He quoted scripture to Satan. He didn't say-"look I'm God and I said so"... He answered with the Word. Jesus knew the Word with every part of Him--it was so a part of Him he wouldn't have answered any other way. Sadly, not my way of doing things. Even Satan quoted scripture to Jesus--so where does that leave me?

6:3-4 doing and praying are to be done in private--the reward from God is given openly. Why? Do I humbly accept the grace(because I think that might be the reward)He favors me with?

  10. Matthew 4 - Jesus is tested
Sometimes I read things to literal in the Bible and can't get underlying meaning. Why does Satan feel he can promise Jesus all the kingdoms of the world and try to get Jesus to perform things he already knows he can do when he already knows Jesus is the Son of God and can do anything he wants? Why does Jesus follow him to the 3 different locations?

    verse 18
What an overwhelming feeling and presence for these men (disciples) to give up their entire lives and family to follow Jesus

    Matthew 5
The Murder and Divorce verses I struggle to totally understand (the literal thing again).

    v 38 - Eye for Eye
This is an interesting development from the old testament to the new testament and God's covenant to us that Jesus died for us and forgave us of our sins. Even though that hasn't happened yet, Jesus has already begun teaching the principle of forgiveness and preparing everyone for that day.

  11. Okay, got home late ... and it's WAY past my bedtime (11:00 pm) but I had to send this. I think this was a great idea and I have enjoyed reading everyone's thoughts! Also, wanted to share I made a choice not to even turn the TV on (one of my idols) until my reading was done. Yeah! Managed to do it one day. :)

Matthew 4 - who is the Spirit? The Holy Spirit? Took Him right to satan? That was interesting.

It really stood out to me that I need to get back to memorizing verses so they are in my heart and ready for recall at any moment because as I saw quoting the Word - Satan will leave!!! I need that weapon alot.

Matthew 5 - I read this whole chapter and just sat back and thought ... none of this has anything to do with the outside appearance! It's all the heart. How much time do I worry about the outside appearance when I should be desiring to make the inside beautiful to Jesus. Am I pleasing God or man? Do I really love my enemies? Do I ever go the 2nd mile with someone? I have a real hard time with those "unloveables" ... those mean type unloveables. I am not following then am I?

Matthew 6 - forgiveness popped out at me, too!

vs. 21 - I often wonder where my heart is? I think the Lord has changed me alot and my treasure is being laid up where it is supposed to be. For that I am happy about. My desire is to TRUST in Him and have FAITH. And I know that is growing in me. I will trust in Him that the rest of me will follow.

Good Night all ... sweet dreams and be blessed in your Father's arms!

  12. Okay, I FINALLY got yesterdays posted and just fought the system again for another 15 minutes. I obviously write too much as you can look and see on yesterday's post. I refuse to stress about the blog part, as the study part is what is key to me. I will get caught up tomorrow with blogging. Homework done, but writing it all out on the blog will take me forever. Too many thoughts in my journal. Mark is done, too, but not blogging it tonight as I have had the computer and he is now in bed sleeping at 11:30.

  13. Hey Cash, I too get get caught up in the literal words rather than the true meaning. I am working on this during my daily devotional.

  14. Lots of comments about the fishermen following Jesus. Do you think part of it had to do with Jesus being in the flesh? I struggle to say this, but could I do it too...say good-bye to Deb and the kids and just go or would I keep asking myself, "Is this really God calling me or is it guilt or fear or something else causing me to act on something?

  15. Day 2 down and I feel good about reading the Bible. Haven't heard anything yet, or maybe I have, but wasn't listening...Or is the good feeling I have God saying, "Good job, Kev."

  16. Sorry I am behind...or a behind.

Satan uses Scripture to battle the King, why would he not use it to battle me, a follower of the King?

Multitudes followed Him. When all looks good and people are getting what they want(healed, fed, etc)...let's follow Jesus...but what about when it gets dark and not so "cool" to follow Him...then what do I do?

I have seen many attempt to keep the Law, and fail miserably. So is Jesus speaking of just the 10 commandments here? Whoever keeps and teaches...will be called great?

Lord how do I love my enemy in this process of trying to adopt Sabian? My opponent at law...should I try to settle out of court? Have i wronged him in Your Eyes by denying visitation? I know You cause sun and rain to shine and fall on the righteous and unrighteous...so the outcome is fully up to You. How can I be perfect in this area...no matter the end result?

  17. Chp. 4 God's words are what are used to fight and beat Satan. He is such a loser! So persistent, and it was Jesus he was dealing with, too! I need to hide God's word in my heart, so I am ready to battle!!!

V17 Repent, the Kingdom of heaven is near. Really? If it was near then, how much more so today? Short and sweet. "Get right or Get left."

v21Immediately they left their nets... What nets am I pulling that I am not willing to give up to follow Him-immediately!!!

V22-25 Jesus was healing all diseases and sickness. Jesus, forgive me for doubting how powerful and capable you are to heal all things in my life. You want us to be whole!

Chp 5 v 11 Praying that my kids will have boldness to stand for Crist and be willing to be persecuted, me too!

v.31 Hate divorce. Just told my kids taht my brother is getting divorced. We are all so sad. They can't comprehend it. Forgive me Lord for wanting my parents to be divorced so many times. You hate divorce, too.

v 43 We never have an excuse for not being the one who extends grace and forgives first! Seriously? After what Jesus did for me? I need to suck it up and deal with my hurts, no matter how deep. What better way to be an example of God's unbelievable love for us to extend the same love to others!
Show me who I have offended and help me to forgive those that have offended me.
